A Seat at the Table: Mentoring the First AI-Native Generation
If AI can do simple copy and design-related tasks, where does that leave agencies, interns, and junior talent?
The headlines paint a grim picture for the entry-level job market. Every week brings a new forecast claiming generative AI is displacing entry-level workers. And some preliminary data bears this out: According to a study by Stanford University researchers, early career workers in AI sensitive fields have experienced a 13% relative decline in employment since 2022.
But is it really so dire?
While it might not draw the clicks, another narrative is unfolding in real time at Heard. Senior and mid-level creatives are learning what it means to work alongside and mentor the world’s first AI-native cohort. We recently welcomed our summer interns to the team and, as their predecessors have done in the past, they’re contributing to the work, conversation, and culture of our agency.
AI is undoubtedly shaping our industry, but it has not changed who we are and the values we hold. Three of our pillar beliefs, Listening, Growth, and Perspective, continue to drive our commitment to nurturing the next generation of talent.
Listening: Thoughtful & Adaptable, Intentional & Compassionate
Mindfulness and flexibility ground us when the landscape is rapidly changing. AI is streamlining and automating some tasks – evolving our relationship with the work we do, but not the responsibility we hold. For junior creatives, part of their training involves developing a sense of discernment, knowing when to leverage AI tools and when to intentionally step in to protect the work.
Growth: Dedicated & Continual, Focused and Energized
We believe the growth of our industry, agency, and each of us as individuals depends on continuous development. Mentorship is a two-way street at Heard. We teach and are taught by the next generation of creatives who choose to work with us.
Perspective: Holistic & Sensible, Balanced & Mindful
Making room for young talent prevents tunnel vision. Fresh ideas can give an agency a competitive edge, but beyond that we’ve found the synergy between experience and emerging talent creates a powerful dynamic. Senior leaders drive strategy and brand stewardship, while junior creatives bring unique perspectives to new tools and our vision for the future.
In an age of AI, entry-level jobs aren’t dying – they’re evolving. The on-ramp for young talent may look different than it did five years ago, but Heard has never been about maintaining the status quo. For us, the way forward is with all levels of talent on board.
